Nucleus Flock Manager
Full time (39 hrs/week)
Based in Southfield Farm, Hawick
Main Role Purpose:
The role is central to the day-to-day management and operation of the livestock enterprise, with a particular focus on the sheep flock. Leading the farm team, the successful candidate will play a key role in driving flock performance while maintaining the highest standards of animal health and welfare.
Reporting to Dewi Jones, Innovis CEO, the working farm manager’s key responsibilities include livestock management, performance data recording, implementation of modern grassland management practices, and supervision of farm staff. This is a hands-on position, requiring active involvement in routine farm work alongside strong organisational and management capability.
Key Responsibilities:
Livestock Management
- Manage the day-to-day care and husbandry of the sheep flock.
- Oversee breeding, lambing, weaning and other key stages of flock production.
- Ensure high standards of animal health, welfare and biosecurity are always maintained.
- Implement flock health plans in consultation with the farm veterinarian and other professional advisers.
- Monitor livestock condition, performance and behaviour and take appropriate action required.
- Ensure livestock are handled safely and in accordance with best practice.
Performance Recording and Data Management
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of livestock performance.
- Record key production data including, but not limited to, growth rates, lambing performance, mortality, health treatments and breeding records.
- Utilise digital livestock recording systems and farm management software where applicable.
- Ensure the integrity and reliability of all performance data collected on the farm.
- Assist in the interpretation and use of recorded data to support management decisions and continuous improvement of flock performance.
Grassland and Grazing Management
- Implement and manage the farm’s grassland and grazing systems.
- Monitor pasture growth and availability.
- Plan and manage grazing rotations to optimise grass utilisation and livestock performance.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of reseeding, pasture improvement and soil management activities.
- Maintain field infrastructure including fencing, water systems and grazing divisions as required.
Farm Operations and Maintenance
- Undertake routine farm tasks including stock handling, feeding, pasture management and fencing.
- Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment where required.
- Maintain farm buildings, yards, handling facilities and other infrastructure in good working order.
- Ensure the farm operates in accordance with relevant assurance schemes, environmental requirements and statutory regulations.
- Maintain appropriate farm records where required for regulatory, assurance or management purposes.
Staff Supervision
- Supervise and coordinate the work of one farm employee and casual labour.
- Allocate daily tasks and ensure work is carried out efficiently and safely.
- Provide guidance, instruction and support to staff members as required.
- Promote a safe, cooperative and productive working environment.
Visitors and Farm Representation
The farm regularly hosts visitors including industry groups, educational groups and other stakeholders.
- Assist with the preparation for and hosting of farm visits.
- Present and explain farm systems, practices and activities where required.
- Ensure visitors follow appropriate health, safety & biosecurity procedures while on farm.
- Maintain the farm in a presentable and professional condition suitable for visitors.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Comply with all farm health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure safe systems of work are followed at all times.
- Report hazards, incidents or accidents promptly.
- Ensure appropriate biosecurity procedures are implemented and maintained.
General Responsibilities
- Carry out duties with reasonable skill, care and diligence.
- Protect the assets, livestock, equipment and reputation of the farm.
- Work cooperatively with the Employer and professional advisers.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the role as may be required by Innovis from time to time.
As an agricultural employee, the terms of employment will be compliant with the Agricultural Wages (Scotland) Order with 33 days holidays annually.
The normal contractual hours of work will be 39 hours per week, worked over five days. In addition to the normal working week, the successful candidate will be required to participate in a weekend rota shared with another farm worker.
All working time will be subject to applicable working time legislation, including the Working Time Regulations 1998, and will be paid in accordance with applicable statutory and Agricultural Wages provisions with the submission of timesheets at each month end.
Accommodation will be provided as part of the role in the newly refurbished 4-bedroom Southfield Farm House.
The salary will be based on experience and a 4% contribution to the Company’s Stakeholder Pension Scheme after 3-months work.
