CARLISLE RAM SALE

Thursday 23rd of August

Innovis is staging its first ever sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 23 August. The catalogue features in total 160 rams including 75 Aberfield and Abermax entries, all of which are performance recorded and reared on sole forage based systems.

The entry will be forward by Innovis multipliers including James Drummond, Lemmington Hill Head, Alnwick who in addition to managing a nucleus flock, introduced the Aberfield to his 1,000 ewe Cheviot and Scotch Halfbred flock four years ago.

“The Aberfield has been a huge success in terms of improving the flock’s overall efficiency from a forage based low input system.” He says the three-quarter bred Aberfield ewes are delivering the following benefits:

·       slightly smaller ewe averaging 72kg mature weight, with better shape

·       improved prolificacy; shearlings rearing 168%; ewe lambs rearing 100%

·       faster growing lambs reaching target weight on average six weeks earlier and with better conformation

·       good maternal characteristics - easy to lamb outdoors, plenty of milk

·       easier managed - don’t have feet issues; very clean - don’t need to tail

“Our objective was to maximise kilos of lamb per acre at reduced cost and moving away from a traditional stratified system to the Aberfield has delivered the goods.”
