  AI - A Commercial Viability

Eryl Morris runs a large flock of Welsh Mountain ewes near Llangollen and also manages another hill flock in partnership with his brother. Between the two flocks a total of 97 ewes were inseminated under the WEGS AI service in 2004 with a conception rate of 73%. Following the success of this first ‘trial’ year, 281 ewes were inseminated in the autumn of 2005 and scanning results have shown that conception rates have leaped up with 83% of ewes inseminated holding to AI.

“When we started testing our sheep for scrapie resistance with the NSP and WEGS we found that the majority of our hill flock were Type 3s.” says Eryl. “Being part of the WEGS AI service has meant we have made huge progress with improving the scrapie resistance of the flock without compromising the hardiness and qualities of the hill ewe. Now that we have tried this new technology on our farm we would seriously consider paying commercially for AI if the WEGS scheme was to come to an end.”

Conception Rates a Real Winner!

John Owen runs a hill farm in the Conwy Valley. As a keen ram breeder within the Welsh Mountain Hill Flock Society John started using the AI service 3 years ago. In 2005, 150 ewes were inseminated to high genetic merit Welsh Mountain rams.

“Even though AI seemed expensive at the outset I have had no problems in justifying the cost as it has meant that I have been able to breed many more quality group 1 and 2 yearling rams for sale” says John.

“AI has meant we have been able to use semen from group 1 rams owned by other breeders and we have also been able to extend the use of our best stock sires over many more ewes than would be possible with natural service. Scanning results this year have shown only 9 out of 150 ewes repeated to AI (94% conception), and if you can achieve exceptionally good results like this then it certainly makes the job worthwhile. Having 141 ewes lamb within 5 – 6 days also means that labour at lambing can be far better utilised and brings efficiency to the system.”
