Cellmark's Scrapie Check™ resistance test is an essential part of all breed improvement programs.
Scrapie is an animal health problem and provides a considerable threat to flocks as a disease in its own right. It is difficult for breeders/ flock owners who have never seen an incidence of scrapie to be convinced of the merits of the work involved with breeding towards scrapie resistance, however flocks that have had scrapie have successfully used breeding for resistance to decrease/ eradicate the disease.
The good news from the past 6 years of the NSP and scrapie research is that the chances of BSE being present in the sheep flock is negligible and therefore poses little or no threat to human health, and the number of cases of scrapie has fallen over the last 12 months. All measures of scrapie occurance - on farm reports, fallen stock survey and abattoir survey are indicating a reduction in the level of scrapie in the national flock.
This does not mean that breeding for scrapie resistance should be forgotten, as it has been so successful in decreasing the incidence of scrapie in the UK and should be viewed as in integral part of sheep breeding.
